Coaching

Dr. Grinstead and his team offer telephone Coaching Services to assist individuals living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders including prescription drug abuse or prescription drug addiction in setting Addiction-Free Pain Management® (APM) goals and implementing specific actions plans. These services are especially helpful for individuals who cannot participate in residential treatment for chronic pain and co-existing disorders, including addiction, or who need additional support during their outpatient or continuing care programs. Coaching by phone can also be very valuable for people who live in rural areas.

APM™ Continue Care Coaching

The purpose of the Addiction-Free Pain Management® (APM) Continuing Care Coaching is to support people with chronic pain conditions who are leaving residential or outpatient treatment and returning back to their home and community. The primary purpose is to continue the improvements they have made in treatment and increase their quality of life by implementing a strategic set of pain management protocols developed by Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead.

To facilitate working through the coaching process we use two of Dr. Grinstead's books that you can find on our Publications Page. One is the book you see on the right The Addiction-Free Pain Management® Recovery Guide: Managing Pain and Medication in Recovery. To purchase this book Click Here.

The other book is the The Addiction-Free Pain Management® Workbook. To purchase this workbook Click Here.

Chapters one through four in the The Addiction-Free Pain Management® Recovery Guide includes needed education regarding both pain and coexisting psychological disorders including addiction, while chapters five through nine show how two of Dr. Grinstead's patients completed each exercise in the workbook.

This coaching process will be accomplished by offering three Phases of APM™ Continuing Care Coaching including an individual 1 hour phone intake coaching consultation session and three one hour individual exit interview telephone coaching sessions after each phase. Optional “as needed” individual telephone coaching sessions may be added for an additional fee. All group sessions are conducted by phone through a conference call service.

Phase One includes fourteen weekly 1-½ hour meetings and an individual exit interview. These meetings will alternate between educational and process coaching using pain flare-up planning, as well as high-risk situation identification and management to enhance their pain management and addiction recovery. At the end of Phase One participants will have an exit interview with a Certified APM™ Coach to determine if they are ready for Phase Two.

Phase Two includes fourteen one hour weekly group meetings that will also alternate between educational and process coaching using warning sign identification and management to build an effective relapse prevention plan for pain and addiction. At the end of Phase Two participants will have an exit interview with a Certified APM™ Coach to determine if they are ready to move to Phase Three.

Phase Three includes twelve bi-weekly one hour problem solving process coaching meetings where participants share how they are implementing what they learned in the first two phases and processing with their group any difficulties they may be experiencing with their pain management and relapse prevention plan. This phase also concludes with an individual exit interview with a Certified APM™ Coach to determine if they need more sessions before transitioning into their on-going recovery program.

At this time, they would also be evaluated to determine if they would benefit from our APM™ Life Coaching Recovery Process. This usually requires at least a 3 month commitment to weekly group phone sessions of 1-½ hours in length.

APM™ Life Coaching Recovery Process
APM™ Life Coaching builds upon the work completed in the three phases of the APM™ Continue Care program. It is an opportunity to solidify the client's learning and so they can begin to look beyond their pain condition and see what goals and dreams they want to pursue now that they have a stable pain management recovery plan in place. Participation in Life Coaching groups is not limited to clients who have completed the APM™ Continue Care phases. Filling out the Coaching Questionnaire and a short interview will determine if you are eligible join.

Something for all potential group members to remember: Life Coaching requires personal motivation and commitment. Some people may need more intensive counseling or psychotherapy instead of coaching. There are also certain circumstances where APM™ Life Coaching can be a valuable addition to that work. Others will find that our APM™ Life Coaching Recovery Process is exactly right for them. Either way, APM™ Coaching will provide participants with valuable education and new skill sets to support them in their pain management recovery. In addition to Group Coaching, we provide different levels of coaching services that vary in cost and time. To find out if this is the right direction for your Client, please have them fill out the brief coaching questionnaire. Dr. Grinstead's office will contact you or your patient for a brief intake consultation.
